General advice for finding a freelancer who knows oscommerce;
1. ask to see a couple of oscommerce sites that they have made, or any contributions that they have created.
2. ask for their official oscommerce forum username – once you have their name, have a look at and see the type of questions that they ask (or answer). You’ll be able to gauge their level of knowledge.
You’ll find lots of developers will take on osCommerce work with zero knowledge of what osCommerce is and it’s structure. Try to choose someone who exhibits at least a small amount of knowledge. Maybe get 1 small job done by them and if that goes well, give them another job to do.

I had the same problem, I needed freelancer that can handle OsCommerce, and could not find someone I can trust.
My goal was to find an affordable freelancer that can make the work, and that I can trust I will not waste my time. After looking a lot in the net, I have stumbled into some stand alone freelancers sites, but felt like I can’t trust them – although the usually had wrote and showed examples and impressive profiles.
Anyhow, I felt like the only thing that can make me feel comfortable with working with freelancers on the net, is to meet someone that others like me already worked with.
After searching a lot in the net I have found exactly what I have needed, an objective site, with freelance developers. Each one has profile and feedback’s from others! it seems there are many sites like it that are called Freelance marketplace , the best one I found was a site called BizReef (www.BizReef.com), there, under Programming I found exactly what I wanted.
