Starting an eCommerce business can be tough. I would highly recommend WebStore by Amazon. I use this site and as it is a fully featured eCommerce solution that is powered by Amazon.com

Their website says it is backed by the same technology that powers Amazon.com and it is also backed up by a their Fraud Protection Guarantee. Check it out at

Best part is you get to try it out in full for 30 Days.

Open source solutions sometimes have more known security holes, because hackers can review the code to look for vulnerabilities. Look for a package with a longtime reputation and lots of users, and if possible, something that is not open source.

No cart is free from allowing fraudulent transactions to go through. People steal credit card numbers all the time, and until the owner of the card finds out and reports it stolen, the card may be accepted. And if you don't use a realtime gateway, you'll have to find that out manually.

In general, check the AVS (address verification system) results of each transaction to make sure the billing address provided by the customer matches the address to which the credit card statement is sent. Watch out for overseas shipments, shipments with expedited shipping methods, and domestic shipments going to a freight forwarded. Although all of these can be used legitimately, you should review them more carefully before deciding to ship.

A good resource is

Good luck!

Once you've built your eCommerce website you will need an online merchant account. When you choose a provider, scroll down on any of their site's pages and see if there is a note, similar to:

Name of Provider is a registered ISO/MSP for Name of Bank,

where Name of Provider is the name of the business and Name of Bank is the name of the processing bank that has sponsored them when they applied with Visa and MasterCard for registration. That would be sufficient proof that they are a legitimate business, as neither Visa or MasterCard will register a shady entity to represent them. The bank that is listed there is a member of Visa and MasterCard and is actually responsible for your transactions. Some of the biggest processing banks in the US are JP Morgan Chase, Bank of America, First National of Omaha, Wells Fargo and you will probably see one of these names as a sponsor. None of them will sell you faulty systems or will try to rip you off.

Also, when selecting a processor, make sure your rates are reasonable, here is by far the biggest rip-off risk. For an eCommerce business the processing rate should not be higher than 2.19% + $0.25 per transaction, with no set up or application fees. You should not be paying any monthly minimums or annual fees. There will be a monthly account fee and a monthly gateway fee, but neither of them should be higher than $10. The gateway too should be free to set up.

Good luck!
