What programs can you use to design layouts for oscommerce-powered sites?

oscommerce
Cecil B asked:

And how do you then upload them, and thus customize the oscommerce site layout?
Can you also recommend some good books that will give sufficient information as to how to deal with the type of files that will be dealt with when making these layouts for oscommerce sites. Thank you so much. (I’m totally clueless and confused abt oscommerce :( ).

Any text editor. Use an ftp program to upload them.

You need to learn html and css, at least. Then whatever language the code on the particular site is written in – javascript, ASP, php, Perl, etc.

Modifying a web site isn’t just drawing pictures, it’s writing computer programs, which you aren’t going to learn in a few weeks. First learn programming (Wirth’s Algorithms + Data Structures = Programs is a good start), then start learning the rest. Or hire a web developer.

Go to adobe.com and download a trial version of Dreamweaver…it does EVERYTHING for you in relation to coding…all you really have to do is click a button and off you go.

At this point in internet learning, most things are already done for you. You can even download templates just add your info to them.

    Good luck!

Designing for osCommerce is not simple – this is because there are many files that you need to change in order to get a decent looking design.

There are a couple of template systems, 1 is STS, the other is BTS. Both are absolute rubbish and should be avoided as the only people who use these are lazy designers and oscommerce newbies. Which means that when something goes wrong, you won;t get any help as the only people using STS are lazy designers (who rarely post help to others) and newbies (who cannot give advice as they don’t know much!).

So…you need to learn osCommerce inside and out. Easy:

The designing eBook will take you from start to finish on a full website design, and you will learn enough so that you can apply the principles to ANY osCommerce design.

Also, see my osCommerce blog at and the Hot 100 osCommerce shops list at which should give you inspiration!
