I think you’ll have better chances of getting (or finding) a good answer over on the osCommerce support forums:
The ability to administer your site is not connected to your ability to use SSL. However, you should use SSL to protect your customers. There should be some settings somewhere that allow you to protect access to the administrator functions of your site. It should not be possible to do admin at all from the internet unless absulutely unaviodable!
To implement SSL you’ll need to get a certificate for your site. You can get this from Entrust.com or Verisign.com or other certificate authorities. To get the certificate you will need to find out how to generate a certificate request in oscommerce. Once you have generated a request (it will be in a file) you can go to one of the sites above and sign up for a certificate. Upload the PKCS#10 request file you generated when prompted.
Once you’ve uploaded the file and payed for the certificate you can download the certificate usually in a PKCS#12 format as a file. You can then follow the oscommerce instructions on how to load the certificate into the software.
When you sign up for the certificate make sure you put in the correct site name as this allows people visiting your site to compare the URL address to the one on the certificate (the browser does this automatically). If it is different they will get an error.
