The fact it hangs on the NEC prompt would indicate a hardware failure of some sort. If it booted but failed to start then I would say spyware/trojan etc but you are not passing bios so look for dodgey hardware…. You can go into the bios and remove the vendor screensplash so you can see what is going on in bios. I suspect disk

NEC Laptop?? How old is this? Maybe it’s just time for a new laptop as I haven’t seen an NEC laptop in many years! if it’s more then 7 years, that’s like 70 human years which means time for retirement.

Sounds to me like the RAM modules tanked. Since it won’t boot from the Recovery disk and I assume you’ve attempted to get into the boot order and had it boot from the CD or it is set that way. Try another boot disk of some sort just in case this one is bad for some reason. I’m fond of Knoppix (http://www.knopper.net/knoppix-mirrors/index-en.html)but I’ve heard great things about BartPE (http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/) but if it won’t go that far either it is the memory, CPU or motherboard. Since it is a laptop your options are limited. Though I have lots of computer repair experience I’d hesitate on doing a major repair on a laptop. You could take the RAM module out and take it to a computer shop. Call and ask if they have a way of testing the module. This may be your cheapest way to start. Good luck.

The pieeeeee noise is good, that means the computer knows something is wrong and is telling you about it.
It’s called a code. The computer makes different beeps for different things and there is way to get it to give up the codes so you know what to look for. Unfortunatly I don’t know the NEC codes !
Unless someone out here knows the common codes for NEC computers then your best bet is to bring it to a computer shop.
My Sister in Law had the same exact problem and they had to get a new copy of windows XP installed, I baught a Code reading card on line but only got as far as changing the key board ( falty keybourd code came up) and that wasnt it. The Computer repair guys have the equiptment to read the codes AND know what to do when they read them and find out what the computer is telling you is wrong.
Good luck and hope the next person who answeres Knows more about NEC error codes.
( maybe rephrase your question ‘NEC beep codes’ )
