How to set up OScommerce or another ecommerce program?

oscommerce
lomodus asked:

I am new to ecommerce, trying to get my products out there for the first time. I am operating on a shoestring budget, so am trying to use free or low cost services and programs.

I have a host and will be using google checkout and possibly paypal as my payment processors.

I have not yet set up a product database, everything so far is kept track of in Excel spreadsheets.

Someone told me that OScommerce was the program to use, but in trying to set that up, I am having to learn not only how to use OScommerce, but also PHPMyAdmin and PHP which I know nothing about, as well as finding a database program to plug all my products in, then make it all fit with google checkout and so on.

My computer knowledge is mediocre at best. I have Dreamweaver, and can build a basic page with that, but anything beyond that and I’m struggling. Can someone tell me a better system to use, that fits more with my level of computer expertise, and still maintain my budget?

Thank you.
It seems that I need:
Ecommerce software
Database software that allows me to enter not only product data but images as well
Something that combines the two?
PHP? Does this come already on my computer or with Dreamweaver, or is it something I need seperately?

Any help would be appreciated. I like learning new things, but I’m struggling here. Thanks very much.

Go easy, don’t try to build a database driven site if you never have before and expect it to work properly on your first try.

I would suggest using Paypal’s e-commerce capabilities first and building out your page with shoppings links to Paypal. Paypal comes with a cart functionality that is easy to use along with step-by-step tutorials. Check

Later, when you have everything working, you can start looking at how to enhance the experience by putting together a database driven e-commerce site. I could suggest a few books if you are interested.

Ok – let’s assume you DO want to use osCommerce…

1: Build your design in Dreamweaver.
    2: Install osCommerce on localhost
    3. Install STS (Simple Template System) on localhost
    4. Use the design you made in #1 in conjunction with STS – learning curve is steepish but can be made flatter, easily.
    5. When happy, upload the lot to your hosting

Now, it’s kind of hard to get osCommerce up and running on localhost, so if you email me via my blog at I have a 18 megabyte download that will get you set up in no time. I’ve literally just this minute finished writing the User Manual!
