As with most things in life, it depends on its size, purpose, and security needs.
There are many turn-key e-commerce systems available. To reduce costs run in on Linux servers with MySQL as the RDBMS. Use encryptions, have a security policy, do not oversize it at the beginning but allow for scaling.
Make sure you the owner/purchaser understand the system — to not be enslaved to your geek-speaker.
Whatever you are selling on the Internet, one thing is most certain about it – it’s on sale on someone else’s website already. And because there are so many online shops out there and competition is so strong you may only survive with one thought in mind: what your customers want and how can I sell it to them.
