If an online company has their system hacked my credit card info is stolen, can I sue?
private_dancer asked:
I mean, is there any sort of legal action I can take against them? Their site states: Our Shopping Cart provider is VeriSign verified. Your credit card information is not stored in any online servers for your protection (and ours too, quite honestly). Obviously this is not true, otherwise how could my information have been stolen?

Yes, you can definitely sue. You may or may not win. Consult a lawyer to see what your chances are and to determine if it makes sense to file a lawsuit.
If an online company is hacked, it is often due to negligence on the part of the company. If you have a good lawyer and can prove that, you may have a case.
Many companies with online operations these days are excessively careless. They like to claim that they have no control over hacking, but that is almost never true. If more people sued, it would make such carelessness a lot more expensive, and companies would learn to be more careful. You have to make security less expensive than insecurity by forcing companies to pay dearly when they are careless, and only then will they learn to behave.
